York Cycling - by the river

I was in York on Sunday, and I had half an hour to take a few cycling photos. By good chance, there was a cycling festival at Rowntree Park the same weekend. Many families were cycling back from event along the river bank. The cycling festival gave many first timers the opportunity to try different forms of cycling for the first time.

Whenever I’m in York, there is a good number of cyclists. York has one of highest rates of cycling in the North of England. I think this is helped by:

York Cycling - beating traffic

  • Good provision for cycling – cycle lanes and cycle parking
  • An active promotion of cycling
  • Short distances within York
  • Cycling is a good way to avoid traffic jams of York and is quicker than driving.
  • Many central areas not accessible by car. One way systems also make journeys slower.
  • Hopefully, cycling in York will continue to grow and gain critical mass.
  • Quite a few nice cycle lanes off roads. e.g. by River bank.

You can’t drive along here.

York has been designated a Cycling City from 2008 – 2011. £3.68m of government funds have been made available to improve facilities for cyclists in the city and get more people cycling. (York Council)

More cyclists on roads mean cars more likely to be aware of cyclists, but, still worth being seen.

It’s not all utilitarian cycling. Youngster practise BMX tricks in the centre of town.

Nice pics – I wish I’d known you were coming to York, I could have shown you some of my favourite routes!

The people cycling by Bettys tearoom are a bit naughty though… they’re riding the one way down a one-way street!
