Top 10 Modern Cycling Inventions

1. DĂ©railleur gears.

We will never know how the intrepid Tour de France pioneers climbed the col D’ Tourmalet and L’Alpe d’Huez on single speed bikes (admittedly they could turn the wheel around for a second choice). Derailleur gears have made the life of modern cyclists so much easier and more enjoyable (especially if spend time cycling in the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District)

2. Clipless Pedals.

Clipless pedals are safer, as the foot is instinctively removed when needed. Yet, no matter how hard you pull up on a pedal stroke you get great transmission. Just make sure the set up is right for the bike kinetics. Alternatively, get clipless pedals which allow room for manoeuvre.

3. STI Ergopower Levers.

Another invention which makes cycling effortless. Having the gears by the brakes means you can easily change gears without having to fumble around for your top tube. For a cycle tourist, this makes shifting gear easier. But, for a racing cyclist it save valuable energy.

4. Lycra

Don’t take this the wrong way. But, Lycra is a great invention. Wool tops and shorts may look ‘retro’ and ‘cool’ but, when it rained they were no joke. Lycra is quick drying, comfortable, light and aerodynamic.

5. Tribars

There is a great thrill of cycling fast. When you can time trial at 30mph on the flat, you get a real buzz (well at least a sad time triallist like me does). At 30mph, I reckon tribars are adding an extra 1-2mph. They don’t change the position of the winners, but, they do make everyone go faster.

6. Power Link

A very small invention. But, its simplicity should not underestimate its benefit. I have broken many chain tools trying to fit a new chain. A power link makes the whole process very easy. It is also invaluable if you get a problem with you chain and you are without a chain tool.

7. Speedometer.

Speedometers came into use in the 1970s. But, everyone likes to know how far they have been, average speed and time elapsed.

8. Kevlar Belts / Improved Tyres

What is the most frustrating thing about cycling (apart from bad motorists) – most people would probably choose getting a puncture. Therefore, anything that helps prevent the dreaded puncture, definitely counts as a major improvement. Modern tyres have developed increased puncture resistance, without sacrificing speed. Admittedly no major breakthrough, but, more a succession of gradual developments.

9. Dual pivot Brakes

Faster and more effective braking from this improvement on the basic braking system.

10. Cycle Helmet

The modern cycle helmet is hardly guaranteed to protect against all major head injuries. But, they are a major improvement on those flimsy pieces of leather, which used to pass off as helmets. The modern cycle helmet is also lightweight and breathable.

Have I missed anything out? If I have feel free to add a comment.

As a commuter and utility cyclist, the new things that have made my life much, much better are …
    - completely enclosed chain to keep my trousers clean
    - a large front basket to hold my briefcase and suit coat

What? They’re more than one hundred years old?

The when in the holy hell are they not available in North American except at outrageous prices in only the rarest of cylcing shops? Why?

Recumbents aren’t modern inventions, more like modern reinventions. For a bent rider more frustrating than a punkture is a car in front of you slowing you down.

what about us commuters – one of my main bug bares was keeping my clothes clean and uncrumpled it drove me made. I use a jacket called a hybrid by Highson sports. Its one i would put in my top ten as it has a hanger inside for your work tops and stuff!
