Most people at some time in their life have ridden a bike, so it is not surprising that there are inconsiderate cyclists, just as there are inconsiderate motorists and pedestrians. These are some bad habits that cyclists do.
Riding through Red Lights. If there is a pedestrian crossing, with no one there, I do not mind too much if a cyclist cycles through them. True it is wrong, but, it is also wrong for motorists to break the speed limit. The difference is that riding through a pedestrian crossing does not place anyone in danger. However, when bike riders casually go through ordinary traffic lights, often causing cars to have to slow down, it gets me annoyed. It is dangerous for the cyclist and also irritates drivers. This makes drivers much less sympathetic to cyclists, making it harder for all cyclists. Continue reading →

When a motorists breaks the speed limit and causes a severe accident, I never hear people come up to me and say
“you motorists are so irresponsible putting people’s lives at risk”
Yet, other people will frequently say to be:
“You cyclists, are so irresponsible cycling through red lights.”
The fact is there are responsible motorists, there are dangerous motorists.
There are responsible cyclists and there are cyclists who ignore basic rules of the road.
When Motorists risk other people’s lives I don’t feel any collective guilt, so why I should I feel any collective guilt for other cyclists behaving irresponsibly? Continue reading →

Any cyclist will, at some stage, have suffered being labeled pejoratively as one of ‘those irresponsible lycra lights’
Why is it assumed by many, that somehow people who ride bikes are one uniform group. If one cyclists behaves irresponsibly why is it assumed all people who ride bikes must behave the same?
Yet, if a motorist was to exceed the speed limit causing a fatal crash - would all motorists be labeled as irresponsible killers?
